The CLAIM project consortium is pleased to announce the successful completion of its 3rd International Workshop Towards Climate Impact Assessment Methodologies for Aviation Technology Roadmapping, which took place on March 11, 2025. Hosted by the DLR - Institute of Systems Architectures in Aeronautics, this workshop brought together climate experts, aircraft technology developers, regulators, and decision-makers, with the aim of generating practical recommendations to support a sustainable future for aviation.
The agenda featured insightful sessions and discussions, including:
Presentation Sessions
Climate Metrics and Impact Assessment Methodologies: Exploring the latest advancements in measuring aviation's climate impact.
Preliminary Technology Assessment & Sensitivities: Analyzing early-stage evaluations of new aviation technologies and their climate implications.
Future Technologies, Aircraft Concepts, and Demonstrators: Reviewing emerging aviation concepts and demonstrator projects with potential climate benefits.
Technology Roadmaps: Outlining pathways for the development and integration of sustainable aviation technologies
World Café Sessions
Climate Impact Assessment Methodology: Interactive discussions in groups, fostering collaborative insights on climate impact methodologies of new aviation technologies that consider geography and duration of their deployment.
Integrated Assessment of Technology and Operations: Interactive brainstorming, individually and in groups, to approach technology/aircraft design and climate impact assessment in three topics: Flight planning | Interaction and network effects | Engine design and fuels.
A highlight of the workshop was the invited talk by Dr. Lily Koops (Bauhaus Luftfahrt), titled “Technology Scouting and Future Technology Analysis: Approach and Insights”. Dr. Koops provided a deep dive into the processes and methodologies used to identify and analyze breakthrough technologies that could shape the future of sustainable aviation.
Workshop participants included representatives from:
Airbus
Bauhaus Luftfahrt
CICERO - Center for International Climate Research CIRA - Italian Aerospace Research Centre
Clean Aviation Joint Undertaking
EASN Technology Innovation Services
German Aerospace Center (DLR)
ISAE-SUPAERO
MTU Aero Engines
NLR - Netherlands Aerospace Centre ONERA - The French Aerospace Lab Safran Aircraft Engines
Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya University of Stuttgart

The CLAIM Project continues to play a vital role in advancing the aviation sector’s response to climate challenges by developing robust methodologies for assessing new technologies. CLAIM features high synergies with the Impact Monitor 2 (Horizon Europe) initiative, with its outcomes serving as a starting point for the climate impact assessments conducted in the Impact Monitor 2 studies.
